Leadership Program Overview

Leadership

The opening session introduces leadership concepts and personality profiling, exploring how diverse viewpoints and styles contribute to group cohesion. Participants refine personal skills and learn how to bring out the best in others, while building connections with their class.

Tourism & the Economy

This session explores the history of the Keys’ economic booms and busts, current economic trends, and the pivotal role of tourism. Participants gain insight into the inner workings of the Tourist Development Council and discuss the challenges of balancing economic growth with sustainability.

Environment

Participants explore the environmental factors influencing local business, public decision-making, and quality of life. The session includes eco-tours in the “River of Grass” ecosystem and discussions with experts about endangered species, wastewater challenges, and green initiatives.

Education

This session focuses on lifelong education, examining challenges and opportunities in the local school system, budget issues, and innovative programs. A tour of a school facility provides firsthand insights into the educational landscape.

Government

This session dives into legislative processes, regulatory complexities, and current issues affecting Monroe County. Local, state, and federal representatives provide insights, offering participants a closer look at public decision-making.

Legal System / Law and Judiciary

Through dialogue with judges, attorneys, and law enforcement officials, participants gain a better understanding of the local justice system. This session includes tours of the Monroe County Detention Center and the Key West Police Department.

Military

Participants explore the role of the Navy, Coast Guard, and Homeland Security in Monroe County, both historically and in current operations. The session highlights efforts in homeland security and the economic and cultural contributions of the military.

Emergency Management

Participants learn about county-wide emergency services, hurricane preparedness, and crisis management. The session includes tours of a fire station, a trauma helicopter, and participation in a simulated emergency exercise.

Healthcare

This session examines the challenges faced by healthcare providers, patients, and insurers in Monroe County. It includes tours of health facilities and discussions about county-wide medical services.

Human Services
